Building Strong Intergenerational Bonds: Connecting with Younger Generations

Writer: Kelly LanzonKelly Lanzon

Seniors, we know it’s sometimes hard to connect with the younger generation. There are new trends, apps, and slang that do not pertain to your life and hobbies!  However, that doesn’t mean that you should shy away from connecting more with grandchildren. It’s never too late to bring up new hobbies, activities, and events that could combine both generations' interests!

Helping Hearts at Home is here to give you tips on how to engage in classic activities, such as baking, reading, and shopping while connecting with your younger grandchildren’s interests and passions.

I. Shared Activities:

  • Culinary Adventures:

    • Share cherished family recipes and cooking traditions.

    • Grandchildren can introduce you to a new recipe they discovered on TikTok or Instagram Reels!

    • Bake cookies or create a special meal together.

  • Creative Expressions:

    • Engage in collaborative art projects, like painting, drawing, or creating scrapbooks.

    • Learn a new craft together, like knitting, woodworking, or jewelry making. You can do this through YouTube, or any other social media your grandchildren use.

  • Gaming & Entertainment:

    • Play classic board games or card games.

    • Explore video games together, finding common ground in virtual worlds.

    • Compare your music choices from when you were their age to what they listen to now. Share your favorite songs, and discover new tunes together!

    • Vinyl records and record players are popular amongst today's youth. Consider asking your grandchildren if they own any records to spark a conversation.

  • Storytelling & Reminiscing:

    • Share stories about your childhood, family history, or life experiences.

    • Look through old photo albums and reminisce about cherished memories.

    • Ask your grandchildren what school is like in their generation; compare what is different and what is the same.

  • Outdoor Adventures:

    • Go for walks in the park or explore nature trails.

    • Plant flowers, vegetables, or herbs together in a garden.

    • Visit local parks, museums, or zoos. You can have your grandchildren research new go-to spots on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook!

  • Literary & Learning:

    • Read books aloud or share favorite poems.

    • Ask your grandchildren if they are on “BookTok”, which is a popular genre of TikTok where influencers and creators talk about their favorite books, and give recommendations!

    • Visit the library together and discover new authors or genres.

    • Learn a new language or skill together.

      • Duolingo is a popular language learning app you and your grandchildren can use together! You can also see each other’s activity when you are apart through the mobile app!

II. Creating Opportunities for Connection:

  • Regular Communication:

    • Schedule regular visits, whether in person, via video calls, or phone calls.

      • Have your grandchildren explain FaceTime, Zoom, or any other video call apps that you can access, depending on your electronic devices.

    • Send handwritten letters or emails to stay in touch.

  • Special Occasions:

    • Plan special outings to parks, museums, or other attractions.

    • Attend school events, sports games, concerts, or community gatherings together.

    • Celebrate holidays and birthdays with special traditions and activities.

  • Shared Projects:

    • Create a family tree together, researching family history and sharing stories.

    • Create digital photo albums or video montages of family memories.

  • Technology & Media:

    • Share photos and videos through social media or messaging apps.

    • Help each other navigate new technologies.

III. Fostering Meaningful Interactions:

  • Respect & Understanding:

    • Acknowledge and respect generational differences in values, beliefs, and perspectives.

    • Create a safe space for open and honest communication. Let your grandchildren feel trust in confiding to you, and always hold off on judgements.

  • Appreciation & Gratitude:

    • Express gratitude and appreciation for each other's presence and contributions.

    • Offer compliments and words of encouragement.

  • Shared Interests:

    • Explore shared interests and hobbies to create opportunities for bonding.

    • Find common ground in movies, TV shows, or books.

    • Consider free trials of specific streaming services when your grandchildren are over; maybe you will end up wanting to keep the subscription!

This isn't just relevant to your grandchildren; these ways of conversing and connecting can also be effective with coworkers, neighbors, and others! Instead of dismissing their interests because they're "too young" for you, show that you're interested in what they're passionate about. Merging the interests of different generations can be enjoyable for everyone involved. For example, your grandchildren might enjoy watching a movie, but they might prefer something more recent. You might need to compromise and change your usual habits to suit your grandchildren, but that's part of the fun. In the same way, you can introduce them to older music, classic books, and other things from your generation. Never shy away from your culture, hobbies, and interests, but you should always be open to new discoveries; you may discover a new passion!
