New Year, New Balance: Tips for Prioritizing Yourself While Caring for Aging Loved Ones

The new year often inspires a renewed focus on self-care and personal growth. This self-improvement is important for everyone, whether that’s less stress, more exercise, or more personal time. However, many also need to care for their elderly loved ones, which can create a time crunch.

If one of your resolutions is finding more balance while caring for aging loved ones, you're not alone!  It's a common challenge, but with the right strategies, you can prioritize your well-being without compromising the care and support your loved ones need. Helping Hearts at Home is here to provide you with some steps to find that balance and peace of mind. Let's take on the New Year together!

  1. Schedule Personal Time

    • Treat your personal time as you would a doctor's appointment. It’s just as important!  Block out time in your calendar for yourself, and make it non-negotiable. Even the smallest pocket of time for yourself within your calendar can make a huge difference. It can be 30 minutes of reading, 20 minutes of Yoga, or simply lounging on the couch with your favorite snack!

  1.  Incorporate Your Loved Ones into Your Activities

    • Exercise together: You do not have to participate in every New Year's resolution alone!  Invite your loved one on a walk, try chair yoga together, or find other gentle exercises you can enjoy as a pair.

    • Shared Hobbies: discover shared interests so that you can find enjoyment for yourself, while also keeping your loved one company! Some examples could be crochet, puzzles, movies, baking, and any other leisurely activities. That common ground could make a whole difference in your self-improvement!

    • Outings and Adventures: Don’t be afraid to venture out just because of their older age! Stimulation is important for both your loved one and yourself. Plan outings to museums, parks, or local events that are accessible and enjoyable for both of you. Being with your loved ones doesn’t have to be confined to one space!

  1. Maximize Technology and Communication

    • Video Calls: Make sure that your senior loved one knows how to work their computer or phone in order to call you when needed. Along with that, daily FaceTime or video calls can make your loved one feel more connected and less alone!

    • Online Games and Activities: When you cannot physically be there for them, engage in online games or activities together, like virtual puzzles or trivia. This was, you are not compromising your self-care time, but you are also not leaving them in the dark!

    • Assistive Technology: Explore assistive devices that can help your loved one maintain independence and stay connected, such as tablets with larger fonts or voice-activated assistants

4. Consider Companion Care

If you need additional support, consider companion care services from an agency like Helping Hearts at Home. Our compassionate caregivers can provide:

  • Companionship: Engaging in conversations, playing games, reading aloud, and providing emotional support.

  • Assistance with Activities: Helping with hobbies, outings, and social events.

  • Respite Care: Giving you a break while ensuring your loved one receives attentive care.

5. Set Realistic Expectations

No one is perfect; it is okay to get off track. It is also important to recognize that your health and wellness are just as important as your senior loved ones’. There is a way to balance your life so you are prioritizing both them and yourself, and that’s what we are here for!

Finding balance is an ongoing process, not a destination. Be patient with yourself, adjust your strategies as needed, and focus on progress, not perfection.

By implementing these tips and considering the support of Helping Hearts at Home, you can create a more balanced and fulfilling life for yourself and your aging loved ones in the new year. Make 2025 your year of balance and peace!
