Whether you are a snowbird traveling south to warm weather, or hopping on a plane to visit a loved one, traveling can be a great deal of work and time. Airports, traffic, walking, hailing cabs, and calling Ubers, the challenges can seem endless. Luckily, Helping Hearts at Home has some tips and tricks to make your travels as stress-free and simple as possible! We want you to stay happy, healthy, and safe this winter! Even if you are traveling to a warm, tropical environment, you still need to make sure you are traveling safe and sound.

Plan Ahead and Prepare
Health checkup: Before you step on that plane, make sure that you have a check-up with your doctor! This will ensure that you are fit for traveling; you can also discuss any medications or vaccinations that are necessary.
Medications: After catching up with your doctor, reflect on the medications you need, and stock up! Make sure you bring an extra amount of medication, in case of delays or any other emergencies. Keep medications in their original containers and carry them in your carry-on bag.
Travel Insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost luggage.
Emergency Contacts: Create and carry an emergency contact list. This list would include family members, doctors, and any other trusted individuals!
Stay Healthy on the Go
Movement, stretching, and overall body wellness: Moving your body is always important, but it's crucial when traveling! Mobility in your legs, arms, and overall body can prevent swelling, aches, and pains! For example, it's known that air travel can make ankles swell, sometimes known as edema! This is a common and usually harmless condition that happens because sitting for long periods reduces blood circulation in the legs, causing fluid to pool in the feet and ankles. To prepare for this, make sure you bring compression socks and continuously move your feet and legs! If you are on a plane, simple ankle circles and small stretches of the legs can make a huge difference; move your body! Also, if you have mobility limitations, consider using mobility aids like canes, walkers, or wheelchairs. Request assistance at airports and train stations.
Stay Hydrated: Hydration will also help with blood flow and boost your mood and wellness. Dehydration is a very serious issue, and that is the last thing you need while relaxing with loved ones!!
Food Safety: Be mindful of food safety, especially when trying new cuisines. Stick to reputable restaurants and avoid raw or undercooked foods!
Hygiene and Immune System: Wash your hands and use hand sanitizer regularly to prevent getting sick. You should also consider taking extra Vitamin C supplements; traveling can make you feel tired and weak, which can weaken your immune system!
Stay Safe and Secure
Protect your belongings: Never leave your luggage, purse, or bags unattended, especially in crowded areas. Do not flash any large amounts of cash or valuables in front of large crowds as well, make sure to handle that privately!
Avoid Overexertion: You know yourself best; pace yourself during your trip and don't overdo it. Take breaks when needed and listen to your body.
Stay connected: Be in regular contact with family and friends at home. Give them your itinerary, that way they always know where you are and when!
Be Informed: Research your destination and be aware of any potential safety concerns or travel advisories. Make sure you know your surroundings, such as what stores and restaurants are nearby, to prevent getting lost, especially at night! Write down directions to your destination, and make sure you know where you are going.
With these tips in mind, your vacation will be seamless! Precautions and planning are never a bad thing, and will only help you get to exactly where you want, without any forks in the road!
